Finding a new equilibrium.

Jim

Jim, CEO of a $600 million agricultural produce company, voiced concerns about a surge in errors in his company following the COVID-19 stay-at-home order in California in April 2020. With sales and administrative staff working remotely and warehouse shifts modified for safety, Jim struggled to maintain control. His hands-on leadership style, typically effective in the office, now seemed out of sync.

We identified Jim's Driver-style leadership as potentially overbearing in remote settings and analyzed his team's communication needs. We supported Jim in realizing how his Driver-style under pressure is perceived by many as unnecessarily intense and controlling. One of our measures was to channel Jim's interaction with his management team into a daily 30-minute video call for updates and coordination. The less interruptive scheduled interaction did not only improve productivity but also fostered a sense of trust among team members and restored Jim's sense of control and oversight.

In subsequent meetings, Jim expressed newfound confidence and calmness, attributing it to a better understanding of human behavior and enhanced social versatility. Further coaching focused on resolving tensions with his Analytical-style CFO, in which Jim leveraged his newfound insight for smoother collaboration.

This case study underscores the transformative power of self-awareness, empathy, and adaptability, demonstrating how overcoming personal barriers can lead to tangible improvements in leadership, trust, and collaboration.

Bianca

Bianca, a 42-year-old Analytical-style logistics manager at a manufacturing plant in Belgium sought personal coaching to address the unexpectedly high error rate in her department, despite her recognized qualities. Investigation revealed that Bianca's leadership style, marked by micro-management and a lack of praise, fostered a culture of distrust and discouraged open communication among her team members.

During coaching, Bianca disclosed her fear of appearing incompetent, driving her relentless pursuit of perfection and control. However, this approach backfired, leading to increased errors and demoralization among her team.

Through coaching, Bianca realized how the primal fears related to her Analytical behavior style hindered her true potential and she adopted a more effective leadership style. She learned to leverage her Analytical strengths, embracing patient listening and valuing input from others. Implementing processes for open communication and feedback, Bianca fostered a culture of trust and continuous improvement, resulting in a significant reduction in errors.

This case study underscores the transformative power of self-awareness, empathy, and adaptability, demonstrating how overcoming personal barriers can lead to tangible improvements in leadership, trust, and collaboration.

Michelle

Michelle, a 34-year-old Amiable-style research assistant at a biotech start-up company in Germany, contemplated resigning due to her strained relationship with her Expressive-style supervisor, Darius. Despite her dedication, Michelle felt unappreciated and criticized by Darius, leading to a breakdown in trust.

Through coaching, Michelle, a very kind person afraid to disappoint others, realized the importance of asserting herself and setting boundaries. She learned to provide feedback to Darius about her needs and boundaries, and to communicate with her controlling Driver-style husband and her attention-seeking Expressive-style mother about their roles in her support network. By defying her urge to please others and her primal fear of letting others down, and by learning to confront issues head-on, Michelle restored harmony in her personal and professional life.

Ultimately, Michelle's newfound assertiveness garnered respect from Darius, improved her relationship with her husband, and established healthier dynamics with her mother.

This case highlights the transformative power of self-awareness, empathy, and assertiveness in navigating interpersonal relationships and achieving personal fulfilment.

Giovanni & Jürgen

We were asked to intervene between Giovanni, the Expressive-style CEO of an Italian manufacturer of stylish household appliances, and Jürgen, the stoic Analytical-style controller of their German mother company. Giovanni and Jürgen clashed because of their divergent personalities, management styles, and cultural backgrounds. Expressive-style Giovanni, known for his exuberance and creativity, initially struggled to align with Analytical-style Jürgen's methodical and procedure-driven approach following the acquisition of Giovanni's company. While Giovanni thrived on entrepreneurial freedom and creative energy, Jürgen prioritized strict procedures, financial compliance, and operational efficiency. The clash intensified as cultural and behavior style differences exacerbated misunderstandings, leading to Giovanni feeling marginalized and Jürgen feeling obstructed.

Despite their initial discord, a mediated intervention helped Giovanni and Jürgen recognize the underlying causes of their conflict and the value in their differing perspectives. Through understanding each other's fundamental needs and primal fears, they learned to bridge the gap between their Expressive and Analytical styles. Giovanni craved social affirmation, while Jürgen sought recognition for his expertise. As they began to acknowledge and respect each other's strengths, their collaboration evolved into a more harmonious partnership, characterized by mutual understanding and effective communication. Though challenges persisted, they developed strategies to address conflicts constructively, ultimately fostering a more cohesive and productive working relationship.

This case study underscores the transformative power of self-awareness, empathy, and adaptability, demonstrating how overcoming personal barriers can lead to tangible improvements in leadership, trust, and collaboration.
